OPEN STAGESearching for the Soul(s) of Europe

The Open Stage offers a space for debate focused on the creation of a new European artistic network. The encounter will allow the actors, but also the artists from other universes, intellectuals, philosophers… to explore the spirit of Europe by trying to answer the questions tackled the previous day: Which are the characteristic traits of European Theatre and European Culture? How can we do both, benefit from this cultural diversity and enrich it at the same time? How do we want to put it into practice?

This encounter is open to people having participated at the Reading Studio, Wednesday, 1st October, but as well more generally to professional and amateur actors, theatre students and the public. Culture passionate and - curious people ahead!

The Open Stage is an event which wants to reach a young and younger public, euro-sceptics and –enthusiasts, persons having a vision of the European Union and Europe which is more focused on the economy or others pending more towards culture. Together they will attend a blend of short plays, rehearsals and an intensive discussion on the existence and the spirit of Europe.

The concept of the open stage implies that nothing is finished; we are the ones who create. The play has not been written and the text has not been learned by heart yet. Neither the stage director nor the actors have been selected yet and the stage design has not been arranged – no one knows how the audience will react. There is only one certain thing: the topic. Europe. Which are the spirits of Europe? Is there only one European soul? Don’t we just consider Europe from economic, security-, financial, tourist and speculative perspectives? What happens if we do not belong to any of these groups? Where is my place in the midst of Europe? Is there a single symbol representing Europe? It is not only politics that decide what defines Europe. We ourselves can constitute our own Europe.
